Open Question: Anybody know where to get a Cuisinart ice cream maker in Singapore?

Tue, 2010-08-24 14:25
Looking for something small and cheap (around S$80 - S$100 perhaps). Something like this http://www.cuisinart.com/products/ice_cream/ice-21.html Anybody know where i can get this in Singapore? I checked IMM (Best Denki), they only had a Philips model. Sia Huat had a Cuisinart, but it was the self-cooling one, which cost like $600++. Unfortunately, i cant buy 1 online, because 1. The shipping cost costs more then the actual item. the item cost around US$50 and the shipping costs about US$60 - US$80. 2. Those you buy online have a different voltage than what is being used in Singapore, according to some forums I read, using a transformer will spoil the machine in the long run.

Open Question: Write a 150 word reflection on what is stated below.?

Tue, 2010-08-24 13:59
Assuming you are one of the villagers at Pulau Ubin, write about some of your responses to the idea of developing Pulau Ubin. In the face of a likely relocation programme to mainland Singapore, what would you foresee will be some shared sentiments and personal responses among the present dwellers in Pulau Ubin? I need this by wednesday, 25/8. thanks :D As an individual , how will this programme affect your personal space in terms of home, transportation, recreational activities, job prospects, etc. As part of a community, how will this programme affect shared spaces like public facilities, schools, identity of dwellers in Pulau Ubin, etc. At the national level, what are some things we have lost (e.g sense of belonging, rich environmental biodiversity, identity of a place) in exchange for a country’s development.

Study after study ranks school children in Japan and other developed Asian countries among the best in the world, particularly on standardized tests of mathematics and science. U.S. high school students, meanwhile, have slipped somewhere below those in Greece and Lithuania – never mind Taiwan and Singapore – in advanced math and physics.Yet classes in Asia are large. Forty students for one teacher would be business as usual in most of the region. In contrast, elementary school class sizes in the U.S. average about 24, according to the U.S. Department of Education. How do Asian kids do so well in classes so big? Take Japan, where the discipline in classrooms is legendary. That discipline isn’t imposed by fearsome teachers, according to Catherine Lewis, an expert on the Japanese educational system and a senior researcher at Mills College. Instead students are honored to be chosen to lead lessons, and they take turns calling the class to order, experiencing firsthand what it is like to quiet down an unruly group. Thus, teachers manage the class by relying on “the cumulative, general power of self-reflection, rather than punishing and rewarding,” Lewis explains.Japanese teachers and students also spend much more time together – the school year is about 40 days longer than in the U.S. – and more time bonding with one another, at school festivals and on field trips and hikes. “There’s an incredibly strong emphasis on class, group and school being meaningful entities for the children,” Lewis says.Japan’s prowess is also sustained by something it doesn’t have: ethnic and linguistic diversity. Finally, Asian parents are far less likely than Americans to be divorced and are more likely to be involved in their children’s education.Of course, there’s a downside to the Asian system: rigid national standards don’t do much to foster creativity. And in Japan some children strive hard to excel partly because they become burdened early on by the fear of failing.Given the deep cultural differences, it’s not clear which parts of the Asian formula could work in America. But the Asian experience does show what can be done when discipline, grows from the bottom up. In that kind of environment, elementary school teachers can focus on “creating happy memories,” as one Japanese teacher described her main purpose to Lewis.

Open Question: Getting really sick of life?

Tue, 2010-08-24 09:50
Before I start, this problem I have is rather long, and I really need your help because I have no one else to talk to. I'm 14 and I have a great interest in travelling. People from all over the world with different lifestyles and culture fascinate me and I would really want to learn more about them if I get the chance to. Fortunately, I do. The 2010 Youth Olympic Games is held in Singapore, right where I live. People across the planet will come all the way here to witness the first ever YOG. Unfortunately, (like always in my life) tickets sales of almost all games and the closing ceremony are closed. I'm so desperate to go I'm willing to pay $100 for a single ticket to the closing ceremony this Thursday when the original ticket price is only $15 (which is something my friends tell me isn't a really guy thing to do). The thing is, I cannot find a single ticket available. The problem I'm stuck with isn't about the tickets, nor the Youth Olympic Games. To be honest, the only country I've been to besides Singapore is Malaysia. Yes, only Malaysia. I don't know about you, but I think it's really pathetic. My parents are busy everyday. They say they don't have time for vacations because they don't share the same interest that I have. I can't convince or be mad at them and run away from home. I'm Asian, for God's sake. Again, this isn't about the fact that I can't take a break from the truckloads of homework I bring home from school. My girlfriend keeps telling me that I have time when I'm old. I can go anywhere I want and do anything I want. But the thing is, when? When will I be able to "do anything I want"? What if I suddenly get Fs for my exams or what if I get hit by a bus and become paralyzed? Wouldn't get to do anything I want then would I? As the Youth Olympic Games is ending, my friends on facebook who are volunteers flood my feed with statuses about how they will miss YOG, or how they will miss the hot Bolivian guys. Their pain isn't even close to mine. I didn't even get the choice to become a freaking volunteer. Wouldn't it be nice to just be left alone someday in Paris or something? That would rock my life so much you have no idea. I guess I'm just a little pissed of waiting for my time to come and telling myself I'll be the happiest man alive in future. But right now, I can't stand not having freedom. I can't stand my parents' nagging and their continuous "STUDY HARD!s". I'm so frustrated with my life I cry every night helplessly. What should I do? Help! :(

Open Question: What can we do with nasty customers in Singapore?

Tue, 2010-08-24 08:53
I have got lots and lots of customers (a trend) who used the items they purchased not long ago and return it back for a full refund or an exchange for a different things. The moment we rejected them nicely, they will go hysterical on the shop floor talking bad things about the company, the brand or even to the extend of scolding four letter words at my staffs! They gave 1001 excuses just to get what they want. Can we do anything about this? Just to let you know, we do exchange or refund for genuine cases within a time frame and case to case basis. But what I am talking about here is customers who is taking advantage of the word "Customer Service" for their own benefit. Everything was in black and white. There were exchange and refund policies printed on the receipt and there were even signages on the walls. The volume of customers that are nasty is getting more and more. They just want to get what they want and abuse the terms "customer service" always as a reason and they forgotten totally that we are human too that they are dealing with... As I said, we got many scoldings and four letter words from customers. Is there a human rights here when comes to "customer is always right"?

Open Question: What do you think of me?

Tue, 2010-08-24 08:50
I'm not sure myself but... Well, I love reading and watching romance films. Some times I would cry or feel touched by the story line, like when the guy tells the girl how much he loves her, protects her, and so on. The thing is, I'm not at all interested to have a boyfriend, get married and build a family (in the future). But I do feel happy for my brother, sister and friends who have boyfriend / girlfriend. I like to attend Wedding Ceremony. A few years ago when I attend my Cousin's Wedding Dinner in Singapore, I was too happy for them. Some times I feel that I'm kinda a weird person having no interest in love life. Some times my friends come to me and ask me for love advice on how to look more attractive to their boyfriend and so on. I just got this feeling that I want to forever remain a Virgin and remain Single. Why do you think I've got this kind of thoughts and feelings?
