Hi, back again with another tidbit I found on several sites that could be of interest to those who like a dose of the far fetched. It was reported on the BBC and several other sources that a team of scientists at Washington U have managed to put mice in a state of "extreme hibernation", allowing the mice to lower their metabolic rate to a state of suspended animation. They also managed to bring the mice "back" with no ill effects. After a few more tests, they will begin testing on larger mammals and then eventually, humans. How did they do this? In summary, they found that the use of hydrogen sulphide (H25) in low concentrations (80ppm) helped to regulate temperature and metabolic rate. Hydrogen sulphide is the gas that gives rotten eggs their smell, it also occurs naturally in Humans and can be toxic in high concentrations. After minutes of breathing the mixture, the mice lost consciousness and stopped moving. Their metabolic rate dropped by 90% and their core body temp went from 37c to 11c. Their normal rate of breathing also dropped from 120 to only 10 breaths per minute.Even more interesting is the potentially wide scope of uses for this treatment if its succsessful in humans. Extended space missions to outer planets. Treatment of cancer and terminaly ill patients. And yes, even the military want to get their hands on it for the stabilisation of injured troops in the battle field. The funny thing is, the more I think about it, the clearer the image of Han Solo frozen incarbonite is in my mind.Anyway, till nextime ......
